BIO
Judi Smith-Phelps is a co-founder and member of the national board
of directors for Family Justice League. Judi shares three wonderful
children with her former husband and she is a step-mother to her
husband Scott’s four children.
Judi is extremely passionate about reforming family law. As a child
of a bitter divorce between her own parents in the mid-70s, Judi
grew up without her father, so she understands the long term damage
caused to children who are denied a loving relationship with a
parent following divorce.
When Judi’s own marriage ended in 2000, she and her former husband
took extreme care to put their three children first and decided the
best way to accomplish that was to have shared custody. Their
decision paid off and their children are happy, healthy and secure
in their relationships with both parents and their extended
families.
When Judi remarried in 2005, her husband’s former wife (the mother
of his two youngest children) engaged in parental alienation tactics
including lodging false allegations of abuse against Judi. Judi was
stunned that court personnel, psychologists and social workers
turned a blind eye and permitted the behaviors to continue despite
the clear harm it was doing to the children.
In 2006, Judi and Scott decided to fight back and they joined
Fathers-4-Justice, U.S. Judi was quickly promoted to a board
position and is credited for growing that organization exponentially
during her tenure. Judi resigned from her board position in February
2007 due to differences with other board members concerning the
strategic direction of the organization. With the encouragement of
friends and family, Judi decided to launch Family Justice League, to
continue the fight for family law reform.
